Saturday, July 22, 2000 We rode 47 miles today, from Howard City, MI to Battle Creek, MI. We rode on Michigan highway 66 the entire distance. The beginning and the end of the route did not have very good shoulders. In fact in places it did not have any shoulder. However, for most of the distance, the highway had good shoulders. We did have a problem with some big gravel trucks. In Michigan, gravel trucks have 22 wheels on the highway and pull a trailer with an additional 20 wheels on the highway. A couple of times these monster gravel trucks past us fairly close. We did not have many hills today. Most of the route was flat and the wind was partially behind non-existent or us. The biggest thing was that we had to go through Battle Creek from the north side to the far south side. This required going through many traffic lights and much of the way was on a 4-lane road without any shoulders. However, traffic was very good and most drivers just moved into the other lane to go around us. Battle Creek has a direct line into AOL so I used the Internet to check on some matters for my employer. We also checked our various personal accounts |
