Wednesday, June 14, 2000 We went a comparatively easy 55 miles today. We only climbed 1,000 feet. We rode the bicycle for about ½ mile to a restaurant for breakfast where a gentleman told us how to get around a construction detour on highway 93. The road was generally level so we made very good time. The skies were gray and the farther north and east we got the more signs we found of rain. After passing through Columbia Falls the road was wet on the edges but the traffic lanes were dry. Then the traffic lanes were damp, than wet, and then we were getting sprinkled upon. We had caught up to a rainstorm in progress. The farther east we went the harder it rained. We stopped at a bar just before Coram MT. I parked the bike under a roof that leaked and the leak was directly over my bicycle seat. I came out of the bar to get something from the bicycle and moved the bike so that the seat would not get any wetter. We ate lunch and stayed in the bar for about an hour. When we left the bar, the rain had all but stopped. We continued on 8 miles to West Glacier MT. When we entered the park, Mary Kay could not get her right foot out of the clipless bicycle pedals. She had to take her shoe off to get out of the pedals. The metal device that attaches to the pedal had lost one screw and the second screw was loose. This allowed the metal device to twist from side to side. After I tighten the loose bolt, she could again get out of the clipless bicycle pedals. After this minor repair we continued to Lake McDonald. Tonight we attended a movie about Lewis and Clark at the lodge. If the weather is favorable, we will go across the Going To The Sun highway. If the weather is bad we will backtrack and go around the park. |
