Wednesday, June 28, 2000 Today we traveled from Devils Lake ND to Cooperstown ND, a distance of 81 miles. The first 4 miles of so were along side Devils Lake. The road runs on causeways across sections of various bays. Today highway 51 between Rugby and the turnoff to highway 20 was under construction. We found out that Devils Lake has risen 25 feet in the last 10 years. All the roads along the lake are constantly being rebuilt to raise them above the level of the rising water. I was able to find a magnet to fix my bicycle computer yesterday. The computer worked like a charm today, I had cadence all day. Again we went through an area with a large number of marshes. We heard birds calling all day. That is something you cannot get in an automobile. Once I thought the phone was ringing but it was only a bird. The crops along the road changed from wheat to corn. Most of the corn was less than 1 foot tall. Most of the morning was across fairly level terrain. We stopped to get something to eat in Pekin. The meal was very much of a disappointment, they took heated frozen sandwiches in the microwave and they did not even have cream for the coffee. After we left Pekin, the road again went up and down one hill after another for a good 10 miles. For the rest of the trip the road was fairly level. When we arrived in Cooperstown, the first motel we went to was full. They tried to call the second motel to find out if any rooms were available but no one answered the phone. We rode our bicycle to the second motel no body was home so we camped out on the grass. After ½ hour a policeman drove pass in his car. A few minutes later he returned and made a telephone call to the motel owner. A few minutes later she arrived and checked us into the motel. Then she again left. What a way to run a business. |
