Afton to Charlottesville

Monday, August 14, 2000

Today we traveled from Afton, VA to Charlottesville, VA, a distance of 30 miles. We are both tired from the hard ride yesterday and Mary Kay appears to have caught another cold. Today’s route was mostly down hill. The first 5 miles was a steep down hill getting off the Appalachian Mountains. The rest of the trip should be easier.

When we entered Charlottesville, we missed a turn and ended up lost in the middle of the University of Virginia. We finally got to the Jefferson visitor center and found that there were not any motels nearby. We spent an hour at the visitor center and then left looking for a motel. The Jefferson visitor center is located at the bottom of a hill. To get to a motel we had to climb back up the hill. I am getting very tired of hills. We ended up at a motel about 12:30 PM. It appears that we will spend the rest of the day resting, and doing laundry.
