Home Jim & Mary Kay's Bicycle Adventures

Hannibal, MO to Clarksville, MO

Tuesday, September 23, 2003
Distance Cycled: 42 miles
Total elevation gain: 2,380 feet
Our Total Flat Tires on trip to date: 1

This morning was as cold as the previous couple of mornings. However, there was one big difference, we rode our bicycles about ½ mile and began a long 5% climb. In that cold temperature we never had a chance to get our leg muscles warm. For the first 20 miles or so I had an ache in the upper leg muscle of my left leg. It took that long to get rid of the ache because we were constantly going up long, steep hills. We had several grades of 10% and one hill had one section that had a grade of 12%. From the top of one of those hills we got a great view of the Mississippi River.

As we continued on our way we passed the tin family standing in a yard along side the highway.

You could purchase the man for $15.00 but the woman cost $2,000. Just before we reached Louisiana, MO we saw on the river two tugboats with barges, one going upriver and one going downriver.

We arrived in Clarksville about 2:30 the motel is primitive, but we are glad for a place to stay.
