Bicycling the Lewis & Clark Trail
Atchison, KS to Holt, MO
Wednesday, September 1, 2004
Distance Cycled: 61 miles
Average Speed: 12.8 mph
Today we ate small breakfast at the motel and then headed for Holt, MO. We began the day by going over a bridge across the Missouri River that was a grated bridge where they filled in the spaces between the metal gratings with concrete. It was a very exciting ride since several times the front wheel jumped sideways. After surviving the bridge, we were in Missouri and we continued our ride on the next 14 flat miles. For the rest of the day we went up and down hills, some as steep as 10 and 12 % grades. Just after starting those hills we stopped in Weston, and had lunch/breakfast. 23 miles and many hills later we stopped in Smithville for Chinese food for lunch. After a large hill we arrived in Holt, which sounded like a good reason to stop for ice-cream before we arrived at our motel. Once again we had some rooms that smelled like smoke so we switched rooms and aired out some rooms. After showers, we will walk back to Granny's, where we had ice-cream, for supper. Tonight they are having Spaghetti, with meat sauce for $3.00 per person.
