Bicycling the Lewis & Clark Trail
Lexington to Marshall, MO
Friday, September 3, 2004
Distance Cycled: 50 miles
Average Speed: 13.5 mph
This was a short day, only 50 miles. We did not eat breakfast until 7:00 AM and started riding around 8:00 AM. We again went up and down hills but only one hill was greater than 8% grade. For most of the day the hills were long but fewer than 3% grade. We stopped in Higginsville at the grocery stored and heard about a couple from Higginsville who are walking and canoeing the Lewis & Clark Trail. When we were in Montana they had eaten the same place for lunch the day before we arrived; now they are worried about not making it home before winter.
We stopped and ate our first lunch in Alma, MO. When we got to Marshall, we ate another lunch. When you are riding as hard as we are, you can eat almost anything at any time. We spent some time looking at a park that was dedicated to a "wonder" dog named Jim, who could understand English and other languages.
We also looked at the court house in Marshall. It is located in a square in the center of the city. The streets around the square are one way streets so all the cars go around the court house clockwise. We then cycled back to the same side of town we had come in on to our motel. This time Mary Kay was the laundry person. For supper we ordered Pizza Hut delivered and enjoyed the evening watching TV. Hard to believe we are on our last week.
