Bicycling the Lewis & Clark Trail
Fort Yates, ND to Mobridge, SD

Monday, August 16, 2004
Distance Cycled: 65 miles
Vertically Climbed: 2,900 feet
Average Speed: 14.4 mph

Today we were blessed with a tail wind which we all enjoyed. It was a fun day to ride, except for the hills that continued to come and go. The road was also very rough and we spend most of the day riding through the Indian Reservation. We never did see a sign that stated we had entered South Dakota. At one point we shared the road with a couple of Cat combines. They were traveling from one field to another, we traveled faster on the down hills but we could not keep up with them on the up hills. It was fun to draft these vehicles whose tires were twice as tall as our bicycles.

Jane and George had a bad beginning to their ride. They were enjoying the tail wind and the down hills, when George realized he had forgotten his water and wallet. So they had to repeat the 6 miles of the trip with a head wind, making their trip a 77 mile day.

When we got into the motel, everyone recommended that we eat dinner at Rick's. So we all walked the long 8 blocks to Rick's. He had excellent, chili and buffalo burgers, but not a good dinner for people who have bicycled all day. We were all hungry as we left the restaurant, so we headed for grocery store, Dairy Queen, and Jim and I want to another restaurant and ordered soup and dessert.
