Bicycling the Lewis & Clark Trail
Nebraska City to Falls City, NE
Sunday, August 29, 2004
Distance Cycled: 59 miles
Average Speed: 11.2 mph
Today we started riding down Hwy 2 in the fog. When we crossed the Missouri River you could hardly see the river. We then climbed a hill to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, only it was closed until noon, however, we were able to climb aboard their replica of the Keelboat. We then worked our way, even, over a gravel road to the Steamboat Trace Bicycle Trail. The Steamboat Trace Trail was a nice trail a little over 20 miles long.

The only problem was some down trees. One of them completely covered the path and we had to pick our bicycle up and over. Not an easy thing to do. We stopped and had a great lunch in Peru, a small college town with cobblestone streets.
The roads became very hilly once we left the bicycle path. Jim had replaced our shifting cable so we had to stop lots of times to adjust the cable. George and Jane stopped and visited a very interesting winery in Brownville and arrived at the motel in Falls City around 5:00 PM. We are over a mile to the nearest restaurant so tonight we are ordering Pizza delivered for dinner and we will watch the Olympic closing ceremony.
