Bicycling the Lewis & Clark Trail
Yankton, SD to Sioux City, IA

Tuesday, August 24, 2004
Distance Cycled: 63 miles
Vertically Climbed: 150 feet
Average Speed: 13.5 mph

Today we woke up to skies that looked as though it might rain at anytime. We ate breakfast and began our journey east. The good news was that the bicycle was working great and we did not have a head wind and road was flat. We have been having trouble finding water in the motels that did not taste of chlorine so we have been buying bottled water to drink while we are riding. This morning we rode about 7 miles and stopped at a convenience store where we bought water. We continued on our way, traveling at 15 plus miles per hour over the very flattest road we have had since we started riding back in Washington State. The only hill we encountered all day was in Vermillion, SD where we had to climb a buff to get into the town and then go back down to continue our eastward journey. We stopped in Burbank for a good lunch in a Pub where we were the only customers.

Whimp's Burbank

Our route took us on a bicycle path that ran along the Big Sioux River and along the Missouri after the Big Sioux joined the Missouri. We took several pictures including one of a statue of an Indian that was on top of a buff.

We reached our motel only to find that our rooms were not yet cleaned so we went to a Perkins Restaurant for ice cream and pie. After returning to the motel we showered and headed to an Italian restaurant for supper, in a portion of downtown Sioux City that has been restored as a historic district.
