Bicycling Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico - 2006
Santa Fe to Lamy, NM
July 11, 2006
Distance 20.3 Miles
Climbing Elevation: 895 feet
Late yesterday Jim caught a cold. Last night he did not sleep very well because his nose was so stuffed up that he could not breathe. This morning we woke up and after packing we ate breakfast and headed out. Our first stop was a drugstore to buy medicine so that Jim would be able to sleep tonight. We than began the last 20 miles of our bicycle ride.
We traveled from the far west of Santa Fe to the far east of Santa Fe, paralleling interstate highway 25. The only problem was that we were going uphill the entire distance. Once in a while we would go downhill but immediately we would go uphill again more than we went downhill. The interstate highway turned south and we also turned south following on a parallel highway but still going uphill. After 12 miles we finally reached the top and began going downhill. With almost no effort we flew the last 8 miles into Lamy.
When we reached the Amtrak station we found out that there had been a freight train derailment near Trinidad, CO and we were going to be bussed from Lamy to Albuquerque, NM. We had arrived so that we would be able to get on the train at its planned departure time of 2:24 PM, however the bus would not arrive until 5 or 6 PM. We acquired a bicycle box and began the process of putting the bicycle into the box.
About that time the Santa Fe Southern excursion train which was full of people who rode from Santa Fe to Lamy and would be riding back to Santa Fe, arrived. They stopped at Lamy and ate lunch. We asked if we could buy some food since there was no grocery store, restaurant or any other kind of business in Lamy. They said sure and we had a very good lunch after which we ate before we finished putting the bicycle into the box.
At 5:15 PM, two busses arrived and hauled us to Albuquerque. We arrived around 7 PM and found seats on the train. Our busses were the first to arrive. Busses continued to arrive until midnight since some of the people were bussed from Chicago, IL. When the last bus arrived, we finally headed for Williams Junction and our next adventure.
