Bicycling Florida to Texas
Through
Alabama, Mississippi,
Arkansas & Oklahoma

2008 - May - June

Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Orange Beach to Daphne AL
Distance: 52.4 Miles

Jim only got us lost twice today. Once he tried to swim the bicycle across the inter-coastal waterway and once he tried to keep us out of Fairhope and Daphne AL. In the first instance he trusted the GPS that said a road kept going straight but the road made a sharp turn to the right instead of going straight into the water. In the second case he put into the GPS that we would stay on Hwy 98 instead of going on scenic Alt 98. All in all everything worked out and we did get to have lunch in Fairhope (a nice town for shoppers) and arrived at our motel early in the day. Today we followed the east shore of Mobile Bay. Tomorrow we will leave the ocean behind and head inland, on country roads.

We traveled up Hwy 59 leaving the Gulf of Mexico. Yesterday the road along the gulf was bumper to bumper with cars and we were told that there was a 3 mile backup on Highway 59. Today traffic was light and the six lanes of Hwy 59 were moving without any problem. Hwy 59 is the only crossing over the inter-coastal waterway and all the people leaving the coast after Memorial Day had to use this highway. We were very glad to be traveling today and not yesterday.
