The day started with a super breakfast at the motel. We read for ½ hour because we wanted to arrive at Historic Blakeley State Park after it opened. This is the location of the last battle of the Civil War which was fought on the day of Lee's surrender. The battle was fought hours after the surrender was signed in Western Virginia. We left the motel and started on our way by going up the longest hill of this trip. On the way to the State Park, we had our first flat tire of the trip. We were going along and suddenly the front tire went flat. We stopped and had a real mess because the tube was filled with slime. After removing the wheel from the bicycle and the tire from the wheel, it took 15 minutes to clean the rim and tire of the slime that escaped from the tube. It only took 5 minutes to install a new tube and be on our way once the rim and tire were cleaned. When we reached the State Park we found out that the paved road ended in a very short distance and we would need to ride our bicycle on gravel roads to the actual site of the battle. It was also down and up hills. We decided not to attempt the gravel roads. For most of the day we would go up a hill travel for a short distance on a semi level road and then go down a hill, cross a stream and up the next hill. There were very few places to stop and rest so even though it was a short day we were both tired when we reached a fishing camp where we are staying tonight.
We carried in food that Mary Kay cooked for supper. Also washed clothes and hung them outside on the railings to dry.
The first cabin had ants in one of the beds so they moved us to another cabin. People have been very nice to us. Next morning when we checked out they would not let us pay for the cabin. Mary Kay had made the reservations about 3 months ago, but still they would not accept any payment, just wanted to share in what we are doing. What a great gift. The world is great.
