Fordyce to Arkadelphia AR
Distance: 53.2 Miles

We awoke and did all the usual today. Left the motel and headed northwest. The day began with us climbing a hill. A little farther on we turned onto a county road where the pavement was in really bad shape. The good news was we saw a doe and fawn in the middle of the road. After climbing another hill we discovered that the pavement ended on the hills downside. We stopped and debated if we should continue or retrace our route and go the long way around. Mary Kay talked to some people working on their farm and we finally decided to continue on the county road. It was gravel and we went very cautiously. Two miles later we were again on paved roads.

We spent the majority of the day going up and down hills. We did see two more deer eating grass on the edge of the road but all of the deer fled into the heavy underbrush along side the roads. All along the highway were signs "leased to xxx hunting club" or "no hunting leased to xxx hunting club". Sometimes these signs would go on for a mile or more and would be on both sides of the road.

We made one bad mistake today. It was Sunday and we did not find anyplace open where we could purchase food. In fact in the entire distance between Fordyce and Arkadelphia we only saw one small store. We only had one orange and two candy bars to eat in the 50 miles between the two towns. When we got into Arkadelphia, we stopped at a Sonic drive in and had milk shakes. We then proceeded to the motel where we will spend a rest day and supper.
