2008 - May - June

Macclenny to Lake City, FL
Distance: 46.5 Miles

We were a little tired last night so we went to bed at 7:00 PM and got up at 7:00 AM. We slept for 12 hours, hard to believe, and we are almost as tired today. Today the problem was we did not have a good meal last night (burger king) nor a good breakfast or a lunch. We rode the bicycle for 38 miles on a bagel, muffin, 1 orange, and ½ of a banana. For lunch we had a fried egg sandwich. About 5 miles before lunch, my legs just would not work any more. We had to stop several times for 5 or 6 minutes to give my legs a rest. We reached our motel and the room had a tub big enough for two that had water jets. We both got into the tub and gave our legs a good hot soaking. We then took a shower got dressed and walked to Ruby Tuesday in a light rain. While we were waiting to give our order, the rain gods came down with a passion. While we ate our meal it rained very hard. We paid for the meal and walked home (dodging rain puddles) in a very light sprinkle.

Road to Lake City, FL

For the first 25 or 30 miles we made very good time and then we again ran into a south east wind that was stronger then yesterday. The wind plus being very tired resulted in a slow end to the day. We even got lightly rained on for about 3 or 4 miles. Again, northern Florida is very flat and since both Mary Kay and I are getting into shape by riding across Florida, it is a blessing that the roads are flat. Most of the road today was through a National Forest. For 7 miles today we did not see a car and for most of the time we had the road to ourselves, the back roads were 14 miles longer, but well worth the experience.
