Bicycling Utah, Arizona, Nevada

May - 2009

Friday May 1, 2009
St George to Cedar City UT
Distance 54 Miles

Today was one of the hardest days we have ever had on the bicycle. Although the distance was not that great, only 54 miles, but it was uphill from the time we left St George until we reached Cedar City. We only experienced a very few down hills. Even when we thought that we were going to be going on a flat stretch of road it was almost always an uphill. We climbed as least 5,000 feet on the bicycle as we climbed from about 2,750 feet to an elevation of 6,000 feet. Our average spend was 8.5 miles per hour. Most of the way we followed Interstate 15.

We thought we would be slower then Scott and Barb so we started before them, and made it to the motel about one hour before they did. Scott and Barb were smarter then we were as they stopped for a sandwich. We ate snacks most of the day.

The worst part of this story is that we had a tube in the rear tire that had a very slow leak and on the last major climb we traveled in our granny gear at 3.75 miles per hour only to find out that the rear tire was completely flat at the top of the climb. All the extra effort to ride the bicycle on a very low pressure rear tire caused us to be near to exhaustion by the time we reached Cedar City.

By the time we got the bicycles repaired and all showered it was close to 7:00 pm, a long day since we started breakfast at 6:00 am. However we found a good restaurant for supper and now we all feel better.
