Home Jim & Mary Kay's Bicycle Adventures

Bicycling Utah, Arizona, Nevada

May - 2009

2009 Pre-Bicycle Trip

For the first time we loaded the bicycle in the car and started out to begin our bicycle trip, on previous trips we always rode the bicycle out of our house or leaded the bicycle on Amtrak. We loaded the car up on Saturday night and left just after church on Sunday. We drove as far as Twin Falls Idaho, found a motel and looked forward to our drive to Arches National Park in Utah. Monday we drove to Moab stopping at the Visitor Center on the way into town. Tuesday we were up early and headed out to Arches National Park to hike the trails and look at the great scenery. At the Pine Tree Arch Mary Kay dropped the camera with the lens sticking out.

Needless to say the camera was broken, so the rest of the day was spent hiking, looking and trying to take pictures with our cell phones. We walked several miles, far enough for both of us to have sore legs and for Mary Kay to burn the soles of her feet, (and one blister.)

But, we were pleasantly surprised to find a good camera store in Moab and we were able to replace the camera with a better smaller model. Glad the lack of a camera could be fixed with the use of our plastic credit card. Wednesday morning we got up early and headed out the long scenic route to St. George UT. via the northern end of Capitol Reef National Park.

The bad news is we drove the car on the roads we will be cycling to Cedar City, looks like our first day will have lots of long steep climbs. Not a good way to start a trip this early in the season when we are not in shape.

Thursday we got up early so Jim could drive the car to Las Vegas to leave it for our trip home, and to pick up Barb and Scott. (They flew in Wednesday evening from WI) We forgot that Nevada is in a different time zone, so we could have slept in another hour. We left the car in Las Vegas and the three of them took the shuttle to St. George so we can all start bicycling Friday morning. Our motel is only 2 blocks from the Historic District so we will be able to have a good dinner before an early bed time.
