Bicycling Alaska

August - 2011

Thursday - August 18, 2011
Delta Junction to Lodge at Black Rapids
Distance 40 Miles

Today was the hardness day we have had. We only rode 40 miles but we fought a 15 to 20 mile per hour headwind for the last half of the distance. We also climbed 2280 feet. At the end of the day I was totally exhausted. We stayed at a very nice lodge in the middle of no ware. It is the Black Rapids lodge and it is not even on the electric grid. They have a motor driven generator a short distance from the lodge which generates the needed electric power. When we arrived they did not inform us of where our rooms were and since I was in wet clothes from sweating, I began to get very cold. They fed us a lunch and I was still very cold so they told us where our rooms were and I went quickly to get a hot shower which finally warmed me up. We complained about the wind and the owner informed us that the wind blew most of the time. Dinner was served at 7:00 PM and it was OK but not great. In the morning we requested breakfast at 7:30 AM. We sat down to eat and had orange juice but we waited almost an hour before our food arrived. We finally were able to begin riding the bicycle at 9:15 AM.
