Nehalem Bay with Nadia: June 19, 2008

My wife usually gives me a call at the office between 4:00 and 4:30 to see how I'm doing and fill me in on her day. Somehow during our conversation last Thursday we decided it might be fun to fly over to the coast. It is a twenty minute flight from Twin Oaks to Tillamook and then another ten minutes up the coast to Nehalem Bay State Park. The sun does not set until 9:00 so we figured we could easily fly over to the coast, walk on the beach for an hour or so and return home in time for a late dinner.

It was a little bumpy flying over but it was a beautiful flight. It was clear enough we could see the ocean from the east side of the coast range once we reached 4,500 feet. We flew west from Twin Oaks to Tillamook and then turned north to Nehalem Bay. This was Nadia's first flight over the ocean - she later said flying up the beach was her favorite part of the flight.

It takes about fifteen minutes to walk from the airstrip through a campground to the beach. One of the highlights of our summer is camping with friends from church at Nehalem Bay. As we walked through the campground we enjoyed reminiscing about various campsites.

There was a nice warm (for the Oregon coast) breeze blowing making our hour long walk on the beach feel like something out of a dream. We are truly blessed.

The return flight was not quite as bumpy as the flight over but it was still fairly bumpy. As we started our decent I spotted Nadia's high school - she teaches languages at Forest Grove High School. We decided to fly over to the high school so Nadia could get a better look. After circling the school we headed back to Twin Oaks and made it home in time for a late dinner.

After returning home neither of us could believe we had just returned from walking on the Oregon Coast!
