Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Buffalo, NY to St Catharines Ontario Canada

July 23, 2005
Distance 51.1 Miles

Today we started riding around Lake Ontario with our daughter, Barbara and her spouse, Scott. We left Bruce and Amber's house a little before 9:00 AM after an excellent home cooked breakfast including crapes with bananas and strawberries.

Getting ready to ride

Amber rode her bicycle with us as we headed north toward the Peace Bridge between Canada and the United States. It was Saturday morning so the traffic was light as we headed through downtown Buffalo. On our way we had to take a detour because a bridge on our route was not usable. We also made one wrong turn and had to reverse our course and go in another direction but we finally reached the Peace Bridge, said good by to Amber and headed for Canada. We crossed the bridge on the sidewalk, went through Canadian Customs and headed north on the Niagara Parkway. This is a road that runs alongside the Niagara Rivers park. We had many great view of the river on one side and many high priced houses on the other side of the road.

We stopped at Niagara Falls, so we could see the sights and take some pictures, and then headed north on the Niagara Parkway again.

Niagara Falls - Canada

We stopped for lunch a short time later and then worked out our route to get to St Catharines. The rest of the route did not have the great views we had enjoyed earlier. We found a motel washed our clothes, etc. and then ate dinner at the restaurant connected to the motel. We then walked over to the local grocery store and bought water and a water bottle for Jim. Today one of Jim's water bottles fell off somewhere along the route and Barbara lost the mouth piece off of her camel back. We will need to find a bicycle shop when we get into Toronto. Barb & Scott's new bicycle is working out great.
