Bicycling New England, the
Erie Canal, & around Lake Ontario 2005
Medina to Lockport, NY

July 12, 2005
Distance 33 Miles

This morning we woke up early and ready to ride. We are both looking forward to spending time with our children. Well not really children, they are all responsible, contributing, giving adults. We have 4 children Mark and his wife Nadia and daughter Aly live in Portland Oregon. He is the one we thank for updating the website every day. The other three all live east of the Mississippi which means that we do not get to see them very often. However for the next three plus weeks we will be visiting our kids. Even though we enjoy traveling seeing new things and meeting new people there is nothing that brings as much joy as spending time with family.

We will be at Bruce's and Amber's house in Buffalo tomorrow, and then onto Ohio to see Katie and John and then a two week bicycle ride with Barbara and Scott. This morning we rode the bicycle about a third of a mile to breakfast where we had oatmeal with blueberries very good. We then rode back the motel, picked up our luggage and headed out on Highway 31 to Gasport, where we again got on the Canal bike way. Once again we rode on the limestone and had several walkers on the path, but this day we only saw a couple of bicycles. In about 6 miles we arrived in downtown Lockport by the Locks. The following picture was taken from the bridge on the top

Locks

Just before we arrived at the lock we saw a railroad bridge which was placed upside down. The train rides on top, while the supporting structure is under the bridge.

Underslung Railroad Bridge

We sat for a while in Lockport while we decided what to do. The smart thing seemed to ride down highway 78 for a while so we would not have so far to ride tomorrow to arrive at Bruce and Amber's. We stopped and shared a sandwich on the way. The 2nd day in a row for a tuna sandwich and then rode down highway 78 until we found a motel that had wireless internet. The past two nights we have not been able to get on the internet. We have a nice room and because we will be in a real house tomorrow night we do not need to do any laundry. We feel like we are on vacation.
