Bicycling Georgia,
South Carolina and North Carolina
October, 2006

Winder to Hartwell, GA

October 16, 2006
Distance 64.1 Miles
Elevation 3267 Feet

We got up and ate our continental breakfast and were on the road around 8:30am. It was another difficult day, as we road our bicycle up and down hills all day. Mary Kay and Jim were very tired from the previous day's hard ride. After 35 miles, both had legs made of jello around leg bones. As a result they walked a number of hills. We decided at lunch that we would ride on Hwy 8/29. We stopped at a roadside stand and bought boiled peanuts. They were pretty tasty. We are all on tandem bicycles and are quite the parade going down the road. People wave at us everywhere we go. Because we all ride at different speeds, and because some of us have had more mechanical difficulties than others, we often stop to wait for everyone to regroup.

So, Jane and Barb got to feed boiled peanuts to a very grateful goat at one of our stops. We rode way too far on our continental breakfast and Barb was starving, so we stopped at the bakery in Commerce, GA and had wonderful sandwiches. We even got cookies and brownies to go.

Jim and MK only had the chain on their tandem bicycle break twice today. They feel very lucky that the derailleur has not been damaged by all the times this chain has broken.

We reached Hartwell around 5:30 PM. We stopped and ate at a local restaurant before continuing to our motel.
